Floyd Mayweather offers Manny out for a fight

So it seems that Mayweather is once again talking the talk.  Will he actually walk the walk this time?

Using Twitter, as no doubt all self respecting top boxers should do, Mayweather said:

“Step up Punk, Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5 and give the world what they want to see (sic).”

Of course no offering out for a fight from Mayweather would come without its potential pitfalls.  First of all there is the date to discuss.  Floyd has a venue booked for the 5th, but Manny wants to use the new 45,000 seater being built in Vegas, which is scheduled to be completed near the end of May.  It makes sense, I mean if they’re both getting a cut of the income, why not move to a place where both would get a cut of a bigger amount?  It’s not like the two dates are so far apart, and it would give boxers an additional couple of weeks to prepare.

Secondly, there is the issue of the purse.  It still amuses me that hard bastards beat the shit out of each other for a purse.  Still that aside, it also seems fair that the boxers each get a 50-50 split of the revenue.  Manny’s promotion team will guarantee his share, but it seems Mayweather is having issues getting his people to guarantee his share.

Now if this doesn’t go through, no doubt Mayweather will say that he tried to make it happen but couldn’t do it but it doesn’t take a financial wizard to work out that both sides should get a 50-50 deal, and that a bigger venue also makes sense.

If it does fail to go through Manny will then move onto another opponent, and that would be on 9th June. The Pacquiao camp has listed a rematch against Marquez or Cotto, or Tim Bradley and Lamont Peterson, as potential alternatives.

I’d like to see a Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, and I think the boxing world needs to see it.  With so much dross out there, and so few fights happening that generate any sort of excitement, this needs to happen.
